ERASMUS+ Teacher Training Course

Course Description

This course is designed to improve teachers’ knowledge on fundamental statistical concepts, to develop a general understanding of statistics and to build statistical thinking in the field of education.


To provide the fundamentals of statistics, data collection, analysis and interpretation

To build a capability of reasoning from data and with statistical models

To provide familiarity with software tools to prepare statistical reports

To provide the way of searching data from existing sources

To gain experience for interpretation of measurements for better decisions

Course Outline

1. Fundamentals of statistics

  • Data, information and knowledge
  • Variable, indicator
  • Nature of data (qualitative/quantitative, continuous/discrete, primary/secondary)
  • Methods of collecting data (sampling, questionnaire, survey, interview, etc.)
  • Correlation
  • Constructing composite indicator (as summary)

2. Measurement and evaluation in education

  • Percentage of cases within given limits or scores
  • Ranking of a student (in groups)
  • Application of probability curve

3. Interpretation of student performance

4. Expressing data in understandable way (reports)

5. Predictions

6. Online databases of international organisations (Eurostat, Worldbank)

7. Statistical software tools

During the Course

Participants will

  • have information about statistics
  • have opportunity to use tools directly in classroom

After the Course

Participants will

  • gain satistical skills and reasoning required to understand, interpret and use that information generated by collected data about schools, teachers and students to improve their educational activities.
